Healthy soils are key to our ability to provide food, manage the available carbon and provide building blocks to our ecosystem. This study aimed to increase awareness on the importance of soil health toward building a sustainable food production system, as well as understand the current soil health policy framework and farming management practices affecting soil health in Alberta. Various regional and sectoral organizations have participated in and tracked the progress of the implementation of the Land-use Framework and the Alberta Land Stewardship Act. This study examines the history and current status of the implementation of the various land stewardship tools set out in the Alberta LUF and ALSA, with particular emphasis on market-based conservation tools. As climate change continues to create challenges for fast-growing urban communities in Alberta and beyond, it is imperative that we deploy effective adaptation strategies to protect citizens. Trees in urban contexts are a recommended climate adaptation measure but more research is necessary to help policymakers assess and realize the full potential of their ecosystem services. (2023)
